Abstract
The paper reinterprets Paul instruction for women in 1 Corinthians 14:33–35 to remain silent in church within a feminist context, aligning it with the goals of gender equality outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 5). For the Urhobo woman, whose identity is shaped by both Christian doctrine and cultural traditions, this passage has often reinforced exclusion from leadership roles. A contextual feminist reading, however, suggests that Paul’s directive was specific to a historical setting and not a universal mandate. By challenging patriarchal interpretations, this study advocates for the empowerment of Urhobo women to participate fully in religious and public life. Such a re-evaluation supports broader global efforts to ensure inclusive development and equal representation. It encourages a dialogue between faith and social progress, affirming the value, voice, and leadership capacity of Urhobo women in building sustainable communities.
