Abstract
Acinetobacter baumannii can commonly cause pneumonia, sepsis, meningitis, wound infections, and urinary tract infections. MDR A. baumannii is widespread and has been reported and isolated in hospitals in many countries. This study was conducted to evaluate the antibacterial effects of aqueous and methanol extracts of Azadirachta indica (A. indica) and Terminalia catappa (T. catappa) used in traditional medicine against some clinical isolates of multidrug-resistant (MDR) A. baumannii. Screening of Phytochemicals of A. indica and T. catappa was carried out using percolation method. The antibacterial potential of both aqueous and methanolic extracts of A. indica and T. catappa were also evaluated by agar disc diffusion assay, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) techniques. Antibiotic susceptibility of selected A. baumannii strains was examined. Based on the experimental analysis, the extracts of A. indica and T. catappa showed the presence of plants’ bioactive metabolites in the form of phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals among which methanolic extracts gives high efficiency compared to that of aqueous.
