Abstract
The role of the State in maintaining internal peace and curbing insecurity is paramount. This essay seeks to evaluate the role of the State in addressing and mitigating insecurity in Nigeria and in South Africa. In NigeriaTerrorism orchestrated by boko haram, Iswap, violent crimes demonstrated through the acts of armed bandits, farmers/herders clashes and extra-judicial activities of law enforcement officers, kidnapping are challenges plaguing the State. The situation is not palatable in South Africa as crime is the immediate threat to State security in South Africa. Crime manifest itself in a wide range of activities which include murder, rape, xenophobia car hijacking, theft, armed robbery, kidnapping etcetera. The findings in this essay is that these challenges causedeprivation of Fundamental Rights, leaves a negative impact on the health of victims, has a negative impact on the Economy, erodes confidence, and Excesses of Security Operatives,Unemployment,Money Laundering Threat. It is further recommended that the State act proactively inensuring that victims of injustices get justice,declare a state of emergency in Nigeria and South Africa, decentralization of policing in Nigeria, trial of security officers who violate the standard of the use of force and firearms among others.
