Résumé
This study examines the interplay between climate variability and soil moisture dynamics in the South-South region of Nigeria, focusing on their impacts on vegetation and agricultural productivity. Using long-term temperature, precipitation, and soil moisture datasets from 2000 to 2020, the research identifies significant trends and anomalies through statistical methods such as the Mann-Kendall trend test and Sen’s slope estimator. Cross-wavelet analysis was employed to explore the relationships among climate variables and their combined influence on vegetation dynamics. The findings reveal a clear link between soil moisture variability and climatic conditions, emphasizing the critical role of soil moisture in moderating vegetation response to changes in precipitation and temperature. The study highlights the seasonal nature of soil moisture dynamics, with higher moisture retention during wet seasons supporting robust vegetation growth and lower levels during dry seasons exacerbating vegetation stress. It also identifies feedback mechanisms between soil moisture and atmospheric conditions, where variations in soil moisture influence local precipitation patterns and vegetation resilience. Furthermore, the impact of extreme weather events, such as floods and droughts, underscores the need for adaptive strategies to mitigate their effects on agriculture and water resources. Recommendations include promoting sustainable agricultural practices, enhancing soil moisture retention through agroforestry and improved irrigation, strengthening early warning systems for extreme weather events, and adopting remote sensing technologies for monitoring and resource management. By addressing the challenges posed by climate variability, these strategies aim to enhance resilience and support sustainable development in the region. This research provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the interconnections between climate, soil moisture, and vegetation, offering valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders to develop targeted interventions in the face of a changing climate.
