Abstract
This study examined the impact of political interference on the operational efficiency of trade unions in Tanzania, focusing on the Tanzania Teachers’ Union (TTU) as a case study. Using a qualitative research design, data were collected from TTU members, union leaders, and government officials to explore how external political forces influence TTU’s leadership, internal governance, and service delivery. Thematic analysis revealed that political actors interfere in leadership appointments, influence decision-making processes, and shape service implementation, thereby compromising the union’s autonomy and effectiveness. Political loyalty among leaders was seen to undermine trust, reduce member engagement, and shift the union’s focus from advocacy to appeasement. These findings suggest that for TTU to fulfil its mission, it must restore democratic processes, enhance transparency, and safeguard its independence from political interests. The study contributes to ongoing debates on trade union autonomy in politically sensitive environments and provides practical recommendations for strengthening union governance in Tanzania.
